The holiday commemorates the day that Christopher Columbus first discovered the Americas. The holiday was first celebrated in Argentina in 1917 and is now a public holiday on the second Monday in October.

Argentina officially calls the day “Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity,” although many in the country still call it by its older name, Dia de la Raza or “Day of the Race.” Originally, the day was designed to celebrate the Hispanic influence on the Americas, but it has since evolved to include all cultures in the country.
